Casanova di Neri 2005 Rosso di Montalcino

Recently acclaimed for their 2001 Brunello di Montalcino (Wine Spectator's #1 wine for 2006), it's no wonder demand for Casanova di Neri is through-the-roof. That being said, this little Rosso is still escaping the attention given to its big brother Brunello. Produced from the same grape variety (100% Sangiovese Grosso) and appellation, the Rosso di Montalcino is meant for earlier consumption and delivers a very Brunello-like experience for a fraction of the price. What makes this wine particularly compelling is that it is actually much better than a lot of the Brunello in the market today. The 2001 vintage is essentially sold out, 2002 was one of the worst in recent memory, and the 2003s just arriving are inconsistent at best and very expensive for what they are. So... until the 2004s arrive next year, this may just be about the best Brunello we can offer - even though we can't call it that. $24.99, open in the wine bar tonight 2/28 & tomorrow 2/29.
Tasting note:
Aromatically open and lush with classic ripe cherry and oak spice notes. Lush fruit and silky tannins lead the palate to a very dry, bright finish. Great balance and elegance for the ripeness and intensity of fruit. This is great food wine. Pair with a tomato-based dish to complement the fresh acidity in the wine.
