A picture's worth a thousand grapes...

Do you choose wines by their label? We most certainly do... and quite unapologetically at that. This Cabernet Sauvignon from well-known innovator Joel Gott and his Three Thieves gang actually proves that a little effort can go a long way in wine label design. Designed by Nashville-based Hatch Show Print (creators of concert posters for everyone that matters for the past century or so) - these labels stand out as being nearly over designed, but manage to translate their unmistakable style to the often-too-stuffy wine business. Better yet, the wine itself delivers on the ambitious promise of the ultra-hip packaging. A bit of Cabernet from everywhere it grows well in California with a splash of Petite Sirah and the Bordeaux varieties mix it up in this oak-tinged crowd pleaser. What more could we ask for from a $15 California Cab? Stay tuned next week for the exception that proves the rule. I'll be scouring the shop for our best "ugly label-beautiful wine" combo. It'll probably be French, but they have some strong competition in Australia, Italy, and our proud home state!

Sounds like a blind tasting is in order.

Yes, cool labels indeed. But let us not stray too long from the ugly label/interesting wine realm. Life is too complicated to drink it too sweet. I have no patience for the saccharinest among us.

How about that Michel Rolland Bordeaux Label for ugly label in the shop?
